The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder. On the Northern Hemisphere, the season for black metal and and melancholy has begun. First things first: if winter amplifies your depressions, please seek help and assistance. Life is precious, and there are still so many great black metal bands to discover. But now back to the release on hand.
The Purest Ending is the first release by French duo Sainte Obyana Du Froid. Members are Obyana on clean vocals and screams, and Hylgaryss on all instruments. Together, they have recorded three tracks, each of them between ten and nine minutes long. Combined, these are over forty minutes of pure cold, melancholy, and a deep connection between the human soul and nature.
Pure and Focused
The Purest Ending is an album for people who truly love and appreciate dark and cold, atmospheric soundscapes. It is available on vinyl and CD, and that is it. By the time this review was written (05 December 2025, i.e. release date), there was no homepage, no bandcamp profile, no stream, not even an entry on Encyclopaedia Metallum. No gimmicks, no bullshit, just pure and honest black metal.
And the lack of gimmicks is definitely not a gimmick itself. Instead, Obyana Du Froid provide an intense sonic journey which is really worth diving into. The album’s cold atmosphere creates a thick and gorgeous fog. Like a golden thread, the musical themes lead through this natural beauty with a clear arc of suspense. You can turn up the volume, close your eyes, and follow the protagonist’s journey underneath the snow.
