New Alignments

Those who have followed New York’s GRID during their ten-year-long history will agree that the band has gone through constant development since they were formed in 2014. Since the release of the single An Ocean of Falling Stars, the band is back in their original trio line-up after keyboarder and cellist Andrew Elias Binder has left GRID. But something else has changed, too. The days of strictly instrumental music, now that guitar and synthesizer player Brian Harrigan emphasises the rough soundscapes with his harsh vocals. Further progress can be spotted in songwriting and production. The new GRID sound is sharper, finer, and more various than previous releases.

Once upon a Time…

… there was a planet circling around the sun. The architects had a very special idea about this planet’s purpose, and about a certain species that should once wander on it. The World Before Us tells the story of the early days of planet Earth, of the times when humankind has not existed yet. It is a Science-Fiction-themed concept album that presents an ideal plan of what humankind’s purpose on their home planet. And of course, it leaves lots of room for interpretation what went wrong in our timeline.

The World Before Us is a precisely elaborate and sophisticated album. If you love genres and categorisations, you can locate the sound somewhere between Prog Metal, Post Metal, and some Sludge. It is the narrative that begins with Singularity and ends with Duality, and contains a comprehensible and thrilling plot. Despite all of this finesse, phases of monotony or longeurs can disturb the listening pleasure. GRID’s The World Before Us demands the listeners to be very attentive. A true highlight on the other hand is the album’s second-longest track Traversing the Interstellar Gateway.
