Skyrocketting with Heaviness

The band Mastodon has only been active for four years when their second longplayer Leviathan was published via Relapse Records. Before, the Prog and Sludge Metal band has already been featured on Tony Hawk’s Underground with their track Crusher/Destroyer and have won fame in the heavy music scene for their independent approach towards Progressive, Post, and Sludge Metal. And thus, their secon album which helped them to global popularity, was indeed a heavyweight in multiple ways. One of them is the concept album’s theme that was inspired by Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick.

Spume and Chop

The sounds of Post-genre music is often compared to the movement of waves, and on the surface, Mastodon’s Leviathan can be described this way, too. But you will not find gentle tides or the pictorial beauty of the world below sea level. Instead, you better brac yourselves because this album contains 45 minutes of heavy swell and distress. Those who have read Moby-Dick will be able to relate.

Mastodon and their guest musicians present a bastard sound that combines the technical of Progressive Metal with the atmospheric force of Post Metal and the merciless power of Sludge. The result is a beast of an album, a coherent work of elaborate heavy music.
