Fans of heavy psychedelic, occult, and sonorous rock music may be acquainted with Sweden’s Nephila. Since the release of their first single Growing Down (2018), they have turned big parts of the Northern European music scene upside down. And with their selftitled debut album in 2021, Nephila have proven that they are here to stay. Nevertheless, some silence coined the atmosphere of the Swedish woods since then. Nephila had taken refuge somewhere in the hidden shadows of the Nordic forests. And now they are back again. With new strength, new energy, and more power then before, Nephila have returned with their sophomore longplayer Huldra.
Skogsrå
Nephila‘s album Huldra is built around the mythologic tales of the Skogsrå. These female spirits are believed to inhabit the forests of Scandinavia. Their autonomy and independence is a source of inspiration for female empowerment in ages of reactionary politics. Furthermore, the Skogsrå builds a magic bridge between folklore, tradition and mythology on the one hand, and confidence and self-determination in the modern world on the other. Let Huldra thus be the magical connection between the Skogsrå‘s spirit and our lives in the 21st century.
Re-Inventing Nephila
When comparing Huldra to its predecessor, you can clearly spot parallels. The twin vocals and twin guitars throning above the heavy psychedelic blues rock surface are unmistakable features of the Nephila sound. Yet, progress and development are what coins the band’s second longplayer in comparison to 2021’s album Nephila. Slightly slowing down in tempo, Nephila have significantly increased their sound’s darkness, heaviness, mysticism, occultism, and magical power. Huldra is indeed the result of a full transformation. Nephila have re-invented themselves, and Huldra is the band’s new chapter’s first part.
