Sounds from the Gulf
With this edition, this year’s Backlight series has reached its final stage. There will be a few more posts about releases from the year 2004, and some from 2014 every other week. And this might also be one of the cases where research is indeed not an easy task. Anfibio, often referred to as Anfibio Ecuatorial Guinea or Anfibio Guinea Ecuatorial is an artist from one of the poorest countries in the world.
Apart from several Instagram accounts, two artist pages on Spotify, a YouTube channel, and a homepage which was not available during the work on this post, hardly any information can be found about Anfibio. According to the Spotify channels, three albums were released in 2014. There is the collaborative album Generacion Sin Mi with Di-Dy Es (12/05/2014), and the two longplayers Anfibio Mbe and Mesianeyang (both 12/06/2014). Very likely, the actual release dates are different. Nevertheless, since a song from Mesianyeang was featured in Mango Monday Mixtape #096 | Equatorial Guinea Edition, this post shall hopefully help spread some positive sounds from the Gulf of Guinea.
Multilingual Soukous
The lyrics on Mesianeyang are performed in several languages. Anfibio sings in an interlingual mix of French, Portuguese, English, Spanish and a local Bantu tongue (probably Bube or Fang). Music-wise, Mesianeyang is as versatile as the language performance. You can hear a refreshing and sunny combination of Caribbean, Latin American, and African sounds. Predominantly rooted in styles such as Soukous, Dancehall, and Afrobeat, Anfibio manages to merge traditional sounds with contemporary music. The music is activating, uplifting, and it lets the listeners feel the sun and the sea breeze of the Gulf of Guinea. This is music to dance away your troubles to.
