In the last quarter of 2023, the song Nemesis was released by Warsowian quintet Hållbar who formed earlier in the same year. They named their musical style Contemporary Black Metal (or Blek Metal), and this is without doubt a sound that might turn major spheres of the extreme metal factions upside down. Frosty Black Metal themes in the veins of Helrunar clash with groovy and heavy Melodic Death Metal of the North or East European style, and finally there is this performative attitude that combines invincibility and fragility. Fortunately, Hållbar were no one hit wonder but have now released theiir debut album Nemesis, an eleven-track beast which shakes and shifts the perceptions of Black and Death, Melodic and Raw, Metal and Core.
Chased by an bitter Enemy
Nemesis is a themed album on which Hållbar deal with internal fears, anxiety, inner demons, mental illness, pressure, and predominantly with emotions or experience that are unprocessed. We may be able to hide or even to oppress them, but at some point they returned stronger and more effective than before – in our dreams, in our subconsciousness, in our psyche. Hållbar’s Nemesis tells of being chased by these unprocessed emotions, and being confronted with them. As the veil lifts, it becomes obvious whose face is behind the Nemesis‚ mask: we ourselves are our worst enemies often times.
From the theme to the musical realisation, Nemesis by Hållbar is a powerful release with a tough-shelled appearance and a sensitive soul. This album sounds like the dedicated seek for shelter amidst a massive blizzard.
