Miġja ta Moħħ Miġnun (Maltese: Journey Of A Mad Mind) is an album written, composed, and released in a small country yet underrepresented on MangoWave. Marton Saliba, the artist behind Saħħar is based in the Southern European republic of Malta. For the last twenty years, the solo musician has constantly produced blasphemous, raw, and cold sounds. Six albums, six EPs, live recordings, and several other releases can be found in the rich catalogue of Saħħar. Only half a year after the publication of the split album MDLXV – Fidi, Vendetta with Mnajdra, the seventh longplayer Miġja ta Moħħ Miġnun is here to spread the dark myths of Maltese folklore.
The Wizard’s Tale
Miġja ta Moħħ Miġnun is a concept album which was inspired by the book Is-Saħħar Falzun written by Maltese doctor and author Agostino Levanzin. It is the story of a man named Matheo Falsone (or Matheo Falzun) who was captivated for a deep desire for forbidden knowledge. Consequently, Falzun underwent severe transformation, and he evolved to a sorcerer, a wizard, or maybe even the anti-christ. Levanzin‘s narrative is based in actual happenings of the 16th century in Malta. With the musical realisation of Saħħar, the doctor’s embellishment of the tale of the wizard shall now shine on with deep darkness.
Sound Of The Ruins
For almost one hour, Marton Saliba performs a raw, merciless, and blasphemous sound. Saħħar‘s ruinous black metal is defined by brachial riffing, sonorous motifs, venomous vocals, and versatile songwriting. Miġja ta Moħħ Miġnun is a masterpiece of contemporary black metal. Deeply rooted in the genre’s origins, Saħħar creates a unique sound by adding elements of doom metal, infernal atmosphere, and the air of the deepest dungeons of Malta. All lyrics are performed in Maltese which adds extra spice to this masterful release.
