The Spilsby Connection

The 3,000-residents market town Spilsby may not be very famous outside Lincolnshire (yet). Nevertheless, it is home to three musicians who met and consequently formed a band. It was the year 2019 when vocalist and guitar player Sophia Woodcraft, bass player Tom Latham, and drummer Drew Moore became Scarlet Joy. The three musicians shared a love for Grunge and Alternative Rock from its roots in 1990s Seattle up to present day. Once satisfied with the songwriting process, the trio made themselves at home in a farmhouse that belonged to Sophia’s mother. Here, they were accompanied by their instruments and amps, by their creativity, and by producer Phil Wilson. The result of this very intimate episode is Scarlet Joy’s debut album „Mourning Pages“.

For a bit more than half an hour, Scarlet Joy prove that the Grunge Revival has not missed Lincolnshire. In the classic three-piece cast, SophiaTom and Drew combine heavy riffing, gloomy and melancholic soundscapes and honest emotions in their music. Different to many (awesome) bands of the Grunge Revival such as Hands Off Gretel or Bikini BeachScarlet Joy do not drift towards Punk or Desert Rock. The Alternative Rock on „Mourning Pages“ has its own modern and melodic style that lives between the spheres of moshpit soundtracks or fuzz-loaded dizziness.

„Mourning Pages“ is an album that motivates the audience to get up in the morning even though it may not always be the easiest thing to do. The title was inspired by Julia Cameron’s „The Artist’s Way“ which contains the morning ritual calle ‚Morning Pages‘. And just like Julia Cameron encourages us to focus on our creativity, „Mourning Pages“ helps to concentrate on positivity. With lyrics that deals with loss and pain, but also with hope, Scarlet Joy spread an honest and yet life-affirming message.
7/10 Mangoes
