Two Millenia, One Void
On their latest concept album, Mainz’ drone, doom, and noise protagonists The Mountain King undertake a cinematic journey through the ages of human history. Pike Dreams is a seven-track instrumental album highlighting seven years of the Gregorian calendar which were coined by historic events with great impact on the times after. Robert Furbished (synths and programming), Frank Grimbarth (electric guitars), and Eric McQueen (beats, synths, programming and guitars) deal with the fall of the Roman Empire, the Roman Conquest, the Battle of Cassel, the Peasants’ Revolt in England, the German Peasants’ War, the French Revolution, and the beginning of the Arab Spring. As a short bonus track, 2026 is a sober look in all directions, the past, the present, and the options for the future.
Heavy Emptiness
Those who have known The Mountain King before will not be too surprised about the heavily apocalyptic themes of the soundscape on Pike Dreams. Yet, the new album stands out as a unique and monolthic release in the history of The Mountain King. While typical themes such as the opulent motif of 1381 fit the handwriting of Eric McQueen perfectly, Pike Dreams contains many new ideas and progressive features. Drifting from doom to drone, and consequently from ambient into post metal themes, this longplayer combines dark and triumphant soundscapes, provides hopeful lights behind the horizons of doom. This might be one of the most cinematic releases of The Mountain King so far, and it is indeed a milestone.
