Nu Metal and Alternative Metal drastically changed the landscape of heavy music when bands such as Deftones, Drowning Pool, Limp Bizkit, or Koяn entered the stage in the 1990s. Each of these bands brought their own interpretation of what the new generation of Metal would sound like, but then there was the insane nonet from Iowa. Slipknot were te sonic wrecking ball, ready to tear apart everything that has been, is, and will be. Their selftitled album from 1999 was a destructive declaration of war against all musical conventions, and the sophomore release Iowa from 2001 was its logic successor. Three years later, due to success and experience, the third album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) should declare the beginning of a new chapter in the book of Slipknot.
Expanding The Spectre
While the first two albums were defined by brutal force, genius insanity, and a controlled cacophony created by nine musicians, the third longplayer was different. Slipknot have added two new ingredients to their spicy sonic cocktail: focus and variety. Hardly weaker or softer than before, they have now tamed their forces in order to deploy them with more finesse. Furthermore, the increased range now included ballads like Circle. Death and Thrash Metal were still core contents of the Nu Metal sound, but nevertheless, a certain tendency towards Alternative Metal, and loans from Rapcore coined the new sound.
Darkness For The Top Ten
Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) achieved great success in North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and other places. While addressing dark topics such as stalking, jealousy, or psychoses, Slipknot reached audiences all over the world, and thus became a voice for many discontent and dissatisfied people. If you had to scream from the top of your lungs, here was your soundtrack. Twenty years later, this album is still a legendary masterpiece, and probably one of the most important albums for the early phase pf Nu Metal.
