Abrichten were formed in 2014 and have since then followed the plan to create sharp, noisy, and emotional sounds. Their sounds can be described as a sort of US noise rock with German lyrics. The trio’s fourth release, the six-track album aufheben, is available on cassette via Chemnitz’ It’s Eleven Records, and as far as it can be observed some days before release, it will not be available on most streaming platforms. Release date is the year’s first Bandcamp Friday, so supporting the band and their latest output should be an easy thing to do for most music lovers.
Angry and anxious
aufheben is a collection of rough sounds with several layers of emotions underneath. While the soundscapes are predominantly located in the realms of noise rock and some traces of post hardcore and mathcore, the lyrics are a journey into the darkest depths of modern life. Abrichten tell us about anxiety, anger, depression, and desolation. These are stories of human beings living their lives in the new cold war era, this is the unadorned reality of the world we live in. With slow and heavy steps, the songs walk an endless path covered in broken glass, razor blades, and dark sadness. There may a light at the end of this tunnel, but it may also be an illusion. Nevertheless, the walk cannot be stopped since the only alternative would be standstill. Like this, Abrichten present a graspable, angry and emotional zeitgeist document. aufheben is half an hour of noises that reach from self-optimisation to desolation, and from stagnation to revolution.
