Come with me to Adventure Land

German readers might directly connect the first heading to Bietigheim-Bissingen’s band Pur who once sang “Komm mit mir ins Abenteuerland; der Eintritt kostet den Verstand” (“Come with me to adventure land; price for admission is your sanity”). Like Pur, Berlin 2.0 are also based in Swabia. But the band from Stuttgart invites their listeners on a completely different journey. Kaltental is a collection of ten short tales from a cold, dark, and troubled world. The setting can be located somewhere between Mars and Venus, and in a timeline between 1655 and 2050 AD. Berlin 2.0 tell stories of insecurity, change, fear, hope, and desolation. Welcome to adventure land, welcome to Kaltental, welcome to planet Earth in the 21st century.

Swords To Ploughshares

The soundscape follows the dark and cold images of the lyrics and actively emphasises them. With gentle strums, the ten tracks scratch eardrums, hearts and minds like frozen needles. Set in a society where fighting for a better future is regarded as woke propaganda and where progression seems to turn into regression, Berlin 2.0 show that there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. But getting there is not a walk in the park. Like Joan of Arc, the band from Stuttgart calls for action and hence make the vision come true.

Kaltental is an all-killer-no-filler death pop album which follows a beautiful golden thread from desolation and angst to hope and revolution. On their second longplayer, Berlin 2.0 provide a bitter analysis of the present, a plea for change, and a hopeful vision. There is a path out of the cold that does not lead into a catastrophe.

We will dance again
