A Different Level Of Cold
A year ago, on 05 September 2024, Karlsruhe’s Coltaine released their first longplayer Forgotten Ways. And we may not know what will happen on 05 September 2026, but this year’s 9/5 is the day when Coltaine‘s sophomore album drops.
Forgotten Ways was wrapped in a cover photography showing the beauty of the Black Forest. For their second album, the quartet from Baden has changed locations from snowy mountains to a rocky shore, to a Surge (German: Brandung). And not only has the surrounding of the cover artwork reached another level of cold, so has the music. Thus, gradually leaving the realms of black metal and sludge, Coltaine‘s doom sound is now approaching the atmospheric environments of post metal.

Drowning Visions
Brandung is a monumental atmospheric and cinematic metal album. Thick psychedelia clashes with deep melancholia, and spiteful resilience breeds beneath paralysing sorrow. Coltaine have created a heavily thrilling and constantly freezing musical field of tension. Like gigantic waves, the different motifs make their way through the nine tracks and thereby push the narrative forward. From psychedelic acoustic passages over atmospheric and cinematic metal themes up to icicles of black metal staccati and sludgy doom riffs, Coltaine present a coherent and consistent album. With Brandung, the band has already taken huge steps forward and re-invented their cold doom sounds.
