Coltaine’s debut album Forgotten Ways can be compared to a complicated trek through the Black Forest. There are easy paths and beautiful sights of nature and environment. But sometimes, trekking means looking for safe passages, climbing over sharp edged rocks or being lost and desolated in the dark. And in the case of this sonic trip, there is no phone or flashlight in sight. Instead, the hikers are set out to nature’s good will, to their own emotions, and to the strength of their group. Extreme situations can demand a lot from human beings, and they can make them stronger. But they can also break them.

The way Coltaine express their emotions musically and therefore create a stunning sonic journey is extravagant. For those who love categories, terms such as Blackgaze, Doom Metal, Psychedelic Metal, Post Metal, and related genres can be applied. Digging a bit deeper, you experience an impressive performance of energies that are hidden in the deepest spheres of human subconsciousness and the wisdom of nature. Forgotten Ways is a journey to ourselves, a confrontation with our own fears and desires. Think of the gloomiest Coming-of-Age novel you know and paint it a bit darker and doommier – that is what Coltaine provide on this overwhelmingly great album.
