Anthems of Disgust and Hope
Dreams are like weeds. They grow everywhere, and even the harshest and most hostile treatment cannot erase them forever. Like a dandelion that raises its gorgeous head through thick concrete, hopes and dreams refuse to die amidst hideous dystopian spheres. Goblyn are a Post and Coldwave duo from Hamburg, the vibrant and cold metropolis of Germany’s North, a place that is coined by both joy and desolation. And here, the two musicians have worked on a sound that depicts both, the freezing cold of a night at the docks and the warmth of a radiator, the darkness of a winter night and colourful lights which reflect in a puddle nearby, the desire to give up and the motivation to keep fighting and dreaming.
Deconstruction and Reconstruction of a Sound
The sound on Stray is deeply influenced by the early days of Post Punk and Wave music. Goblyn dissect the cold and claustrophobic soundscapes of the late Cold War-era and reattach them in a dynamic way. On the album’s first half especially, experimental noises coin the sonic environment. Gradually, the atmosphere becomes warmer, brighter, more hopeful. You can thus listen to Stray while getting lost and finding yourselves again. Goblyn present a coherent musical journey that begins amidst pressure, darkness, and insecurity. Over the course of the eleven tracks, the compass seems to become recalibrated, and therefore, the final track Smooth leaves the listeners with new hope, and with motivation for trying or starting again.
