Sounds from the Black Hole

When Kanaan speak of the black hole, they mean Athletic Sound Studio in Halden. Here, the trio recorded their tenth album in a session of seven days in September 2025 together with Dag Erik Johansen. Further overdubs wer recorded at RCS Studios, and then the album was mixed by Dag Erik Johansen and mastered by George Tanderø. And a year later, the album Kanaan has finally been released via Jansen Records. Kanaan‘s selft-titled album is their tenth longplayer to be published in ten years. This album is proof of the band’s restless constant progress.

Coming Of Age

Eskild Myrvoll (bass, synth, mellotron, guitar), Ingvald André Vassbø (drums, percussion), and Ask Vatn Strøm (guitars, percussion, oscillations) have grown up. They have become adults, and you can hear that the sound they produce is more mature, further developed, and more farsighted than ever before. The four instrumental pieces on Kanaan are coined by heavy psychedelia, by crunchy riffs, by jazzy friskiness, and by a golden chord which leads from the openings of P1800 to the fifth part of The Wonderer. Third album track Ouroboros can be used as an ideal allegory for the album. Like the snake that bites its own tail, the sonic journey spirals and twists itself forward towards infinity.

Breaking Free

Making their tenth longplayer the eponymous album was an excellent choice. Like no other release before, Kanaan is a powerful representation of the pure Kanaan sound. The three musicians from Norway showcase where they come from, where they are now, and give an outlook where they are heading towards. Between atmospheric and psychedelic passages that reach up into the realms of post rock and heavy tides of fuzz rock, the trio presents a versatile and coherent sonic narrative. Jazz and rock come together in a fantastic universe. The troubles and the struggles of the outside have no say here. This is where the magic of fuzzed out norwegian psych rock heals the listeners’ minds and souls.
