Land, ho!
Northern German Hardcore Punk band Smoke Blow has already passed through some stormy tides when they set anchor at Berlin’s independent labl Noisolution. It was here, where their third longplayer German Angst was released, and where the band reached their absolute climax two years later by releasing Dark Angel. But this text shall not be about the legendary album form 2005, instead we are focusing on the longplayer which paved the way for Dark Angel. This German Angst!
Full Steam Ahead
If you are lookign for a break, for artistic step-by-step structuring in songs, or for atmospheric Post Genre wave-like movement… you may not become super happy here. Smoke Blow’s third album is the opposite of compromise. Yet, German Angst is far from dull and brainless Beatdown or Post-NYHC-style Hardcore. Instead, the band from Kiel presents themselves in a shape of a heavy tanker – like the one that Der Diener painted for the cover artwork.
Entering the Dark Side of the Moshpit
Towards the second half of the album especially, German Angst becomes really dark. This is where the face-kicking Hardcore Punk gradually turns towards Sludge and Stoner Punk. Yes, it is indeed a dark sound, a gigantic vortex that drags the listeners through ice cold sea water to wake them up. Where do they wake up from their frenzy? Amidst the reality of German Angst, a place where violence and oppression are daily business. But why do Smoke Blow wake us up? Well, we need to be awake to fight the power…
Maybe some of you recognised that the order of the Blast from the Past series was recently mixed up a little… The text on Smoke Blow should’ve been published last week, and instead this week it would’ve been The Marshall Mathers LP 2 in the series The Year 2013. Sorry for the mix-up.
