The small island kingdom of Bahrain has only been mentioned on MangoWave once before this review. But Spotlight #011 has already let us learn that extreme metal is a thing in the small country with its 1.5 million residents. But this time, we are not talking about death and thrash metal duo Necrosin, although their seltitled EP is really worth checking out. Now, we are encountering the sounds of prog and ambient death metal trio Zvindiyar by diving into their debut album Six Rites.
Six Rites
This six-track longplayer is an expedition into the spheres of tradition and mythology of Arab and Persian origin. Zvindiyar present a concept which explores Six Rites that have coined past, present, and potential future of the area that is often referred to as the Middle East. Ancient thoughts on collapse and reformation, on life and death, on transformation and transcendance define the concept of Six Rites.
Atmospheric Collapse
When it comes to the music, the influence of Arab or Persian culture is rather a marginal note. Zvindiyar play progressive and atmospheric death metal which could also have been written and produced in Europe or North America. Six Rites does nevertheless contaon outstanding sounds since Zvindiyar know how to combine atmospheric elements with the noise of gigantic collapses. Progressive and thrilling song structures form a golden thread across the whole album which makes Six Rites beautifull cohesive and exciting. For half an hour, Zvindiyar perform a death metal sound written so sophisticated it never gets boring. And they present a prog metal album so heavy it hurts. And on top of this awesome performance, the Bahraini band spans a gorgeous mist of atmosphere to finish their powerful debut album.
