Destination: Nowhere
Philip Theurer, Hotti Böhm, and Zooey Agro have decided to make their fourth album the selftitled one. And while an eponymous longplayer may often be referred to an artist or a band finding and defining themselves, 13YC is rather escapism-themed. But is that not a central motif of 13 Year Cicada‘s music anyways? The trio’s recent album haha gravity was a cynical take on trickle-down economics, and it also marked a significant change in the band’s sound. Furtherly developing their music, 13 Year Cicada have recorded four new tracks dealing with traveling, leaving, escaping, or finding oneself by losing oneself first. Yes, this is indeed a manifestation of 13 Year Cicada‘s art, and therefore an excellent choice making this fourth album the one being called 13YC.
Aiming for the Unknown
Categorising 13YC in terms of musical genres is unnecessary. You can find many themes that fit the math rock definition, you may discover traits of post punk, synthwave, or noise pop. But 13 Year Cicada sound like 13 Year Cicada, and they have established their very own sound. Organic and electronic or synthetic themes dance with each other until they find the right loop. Once this harmony has been established, the songs spiral into psychedelic depths and cosmic heights. The A-Side’s second track Bandaid sounds like a continuation from themes of the previous album. And in genereal, the band’s fourth album is a confident manifesto of their ongoing artistic progress. Where are 13 Year Cicada going from here? How will they develop furtherly? We shall all be excited, and hopefully support their extravagant live shows in the meantime.
