Sound of the Northwest

Whether the USA’s Pacific Northwest and Germany’s Bundesland Northrhine-Westphalia have much in common or not might be an interesting question for travel bloggers. But here is one connection between the two regions that has proven to be a perfect match. Dortmund’s Daily Thompson have once again recorded an album with Tony Reed at APL Recording in Seattle, Washington. It is their eighth full length release, and the second studio album featuring drummer Thorsten Stratmann. And including the live album Live At Freak Valley Festival 2022, the new longplayer Glue is Daily Thompson‘s fifth release with Berlin’s indie label Noisolution. Apparently, Mercedes Lalakakis, Danny Zaremba, and Thorsten Stratmann have indeed found the Glue that sticks them together with the good things.

Sound of Freedom

Glue is the continuation of a musical journey that has gathered speed with the release of 2021’s album God Of Spinoza, if not earlier. While obviously referring to legends of the 90s grunge wave, Daily Thompson present the latest and refined version of their very own sound. Meaning, you can of course draw parallels to L7, Smashing Pumpkins, or Alice In Chains, but these eight tracks sound like Daily Thompson more than ever before. Compared to God Of Spinoza and Chuparosa, the trio has become even more confident and strong. And yet, Glue sounds so smooth, elegant, and even a bit laidback.

Sound of Progress

That said, is Glue the best album by Daily Thompson? Those who have followed the band for some time may agree that a reference to Homer J. Simpson is adequate here: it is there best album so far! Daily Thompson have constantly re-invented their sound without ever leaving their path since early days. And the atmospheric, sonorous grunge sounds of Glue are living proof for the success of that development. Glue is heavy, soulful, moving, atmospheric, and confident. The album contains stories about dreams and visions, about freedom and liberation, about equality and struggle.

Sound of Independence

Maybe the best word for describing Glue is diversity. Yes, Daily Thompson stay true to their refined alternative rock sound, and yet, the pictures projected by the music are so various. Closing your eyes while listening, you may see rainy streets in suburbia, or endless straight road to ride along to, or something completely different. It is this amazing atmosphere which makes Glue so special. Each of these eight songs is a solid source for confidence, hopes, dreams, and empowerment.
