Reinterpreting Reality: Part 3
Italian quartet DESIGN has followed their mission to reshape facets of real life since 2008. Their previous album Technicolor Noise (2012, Zeta Factory) and Daytime Sleepwalkers (2015, This Is Core) only mark two of the milestone, the darkwave band from Ancona has passed on this journey. A decade after the release of their remix album DRSMX, the four musicians from Italy’s Eastern coast are back from a hiatus with their third longplayer Faithless. The eleven-track album deals with the reality of pur post-modern world, and it provides a dark and sober perspective between resilience and escapism.
Inside The Belly Of The Whale
In a world that lacks faith, equality, and empathy, individuals tend to seek refuge in safe spaces. The album’s theme is an escape into a belly of a whale, a famous metaphor in human literature over the ages. From the Book of יוֹנָה (Jonah) over Carlo Collodi‘s Pinocchio to Herman Melville‘s Moby-Dick, whales have always fascinated creators of culture. And DESIGN continue this symbolism on their third album. The inside of the graceful animal is both, a sanctuary from the chaos outside, and a dark place where the story’s protagonist confronts their inner demons. On a parabolic arc of suspence, the narrative of Faithless goes from uncertainty to calm and finally out of the dark.

Faithless is coined by raw and dark sounds. Melancholic post punk atmosphere builds the background on which flashes and sparks of darkwave and industrial rock provide the lighting. This shadow play creates different perspectives on the status quo on planet Earth, on inner conflicts, and on possible ways out of these vicious circles of our reality. As dark as the music on Faithless is, DESIGN know how to implement hopeful and encouraging motifs. And thus, the album is a motivating and moving piece of contemporary arts.
