Edelweißpiraten sind treu
One year after the release of their first EP Edelweiß, Cologne’s art punks Grenzontrolle are back with their sophomore release Piraten. Combined, the two names form the name of a resistance movement in Nazi Germany. But the quartet does not simply remind of the fight against fascism back in the first half of the 20th century. Instead, Grenzkontrolle (German: Border Control) transfer the narrative to contemporary times and thus deal with inequality, late capitalism, and the cold darkness of our present days.
Of Life and Death, Then and Now
The three-track EP deals with lost dreams, desolation, war and violence, and dreams of a better future worth fighting for. Yes, this a sober and honest reflection of the world we currently live in. Piraten is an artistic interpretation of the cold present that we call our environment. Racism, injustice, social pressure, and uncertainty form a grey canvas on which Grenzkontrolle paint their colourful images. And these boppy pictures manage to create sparks of hope and joy amidst all of this darkness. With musical references to the eras of proto punk, synthwave, Neue Deutsche Welle, and 80s post punk, the four musicians perform versatile art punk sounds. Piraten is raw yet psychedelic, dark yet hopeful, and a collection of three banger tracks.
