Nes Croft is a great example of a contemporary craftsman, who succeeds in the unification of different genres, combining the digital and the analog, the simple and the complex – the pop and the avante. „Ouroboros“ is the latest album in the impressive plethora of releases by the New York artist/sound engineer, known best for his talent of blending different cultures, mediums, and approaches.
From the first sounds of „Ouroboros“ one can sense that it is more of an experiment in producing audio in various forms rather than music and traditional songwriting. Glitched-out IDM beats flow unstoppably, fading in and out, while the heavily modded vocals pronounce line after line of pure stream of consciousness with simple melodies and charming infantile lyrics.

It is heavily inspired by the later pop-scene innovators like Anohni (if Anohni was way more positive and way less moody), FKA Twigs (with less focus on vocals), and Shygirl (with more focus on music).
It is also difficult to imagine experiencing „Ouroboros“ separated from the artworks and imagery of Nes Croft that is relevant and in touch with modern visual arts.
With choosing paths less trodden, „Ouroboros“ demonstrates plenty of potential within the creative projects of Nes Croft and is definitely worth keeping an eye on in 2023.
