Mooncult – Ghost Song

New Coast, same Cult
Mooncult is the brainchild of vocalist and guitar player Raven Mystere. The Californian artist’s shoegazy Post Punk solo project became a band in 2018. Combining the psychedelic power of Nico and Velvet Underground with Noise and Death Rock, Mooncult found their own hazy and dizzy sonic niche. Their debut album Swallow me whole is a gorgeous display of this timeless sound. Then came the pandemic, the lockdowns, and all of those 2020 things. Mooncult leader Raven Mystere decided to move from LA to NY where she quickly gathered new members and thus reestablished the Mooncult. In a new formation and with new motivation, the Brooklyn Mooncult is about to release two EPs in 2023. The first single release is the song on hand: here is the Ghost Song.
Getting raw
Those who know the works by LA’s Mooncult will quickly spot a significant difference in the sound of the new single. Mooncult have gotten rawer, rougher, dirtier. Without abandoning the cult’s roots in Post Punk, Garage, Psych or Shoegaze, new ingredients have been added to the sonic cocktail. Those are predominantly Noise and Death Rock. As this new recipe gets stirred up by the Brooklyn Mooncult, it turns into a hazy vortex of gloomy sounds, and into the greatest Mooncult sound that has been there (so far).
