Dark Loops, Cold Waves

On their third longplayer, Markus and Frank invite their listeners to a dystopian and futuristic sphere. Feel Safe is the message that is sprayed onto the cold and bare shelter walls where people are trying to make the best of their situation. In a world torn apart by multiple divisions, safety and comfort is what we seek. But with freedom, privacy, expression, belief, or progress being some of the other binding screws or variables in this complex setting, the search for safety may interfere with ethical aspects. Feel Safe is set in a universe similar to dystopian narratives such as Blade Runner, Terminator, The Matrix or I, Robot. Humankind and modenr technology seem to be at war, or at least there are many liberties of being human at stake. But is artificial intelligence really or enemy here, or is the reality actually way more complicated?

A Celebration of Life and Resilience

Feel Safe is not predominantly the soundtrack for actively fighting against dystopian darkness. Instead, these thirty-five minutes of dark and encouraging sounds empower the inner resistance. This is the sound for those who refuse to drown in darkness and endless loops of grief. Bare walls can be painted in vivid colours, shelter rooms can be turned into stages and dance floors, resilience can grow amidst the shadows and become the source for a new light. Life and death, apocalypse and genesis move in cycles or spirals, and the darkest spot of such a loop is where a new dawn will soon rise.

The Noise of the Future

YASS have created a coherent and thrilling soundscape on their third album Feel Safe. The eight tracks follow a golden thread and common themes. Alongside traces of protagonists such as Kraftwerk or Einstürzende Neubauten, the German duo has produced a unique soundscape that can be located somewhere between post punk, krautrock, noise rock, coldwave, darkwave, you name it. Psychedelia meets noise, darkness clashes with colours of new hope, and the loop continues infinitely.
