Escape From Failed Democracies

The three members of Berlin-based band ÿdeg say they come from failed democracies, meaning Hungary and Saxony. Where do those gather who escape from populism and illiberal societies in Europe’s East? Of course, they come together in Berlin, the city that was once ideographic for both connection and division of global East and West. In January 2023, the trio has released their three-track demo tape állapot, and now they proudly present their first vinyl release elme via It’s Eleven Records. You may to refer to elme as an EP or a mini album, it is in any case a powerload of angry, frustrated, embittered music.

Mysterious and emotional

Vocalist and bassist András sings in his mother tongue Hungarian, a language spoken by less than 15 million people on our planet. He is accompanied on his mission by Marcus on guitar, and Ronny on drums, recording and mix. elme was masterd by Marvin Menz at Tide Studio.

According to the presskit, the lyrics deal with alienation, frustration, bitter humour, political and personal issues in the post-truth world, and life in the metropolitan sphere. The open is called +36 which probably refers to the international calling code of Hungary but may also be a coreference to Berlin’s district of Kreuzberg. Next up, the song Ui might have to do with Bertolt Brecht’s fictional character Arturo Ui, and the second-but-last song M5’s title leaves plenty of space for interpretation to those who do not understand Hungarian: global cluster Messier 5, Einstürzende Neubauten’s album M5, The Ultimate Computer from Star Trek, a BMW car, an American tank, a tram line in Bucharest? All remaining songs have Hungarian names: Bajok (Trouble), Senkit Sem (Nobody), Dicső múltból (From A Glorious Past), and Középszerű szar (Mediocre Shit). No guarantee that these translations are correct.

Post Punk and Post Hardcore for the Post Truth World

As angry and emotional the sound of these seven tracks is, it is yet artistic and activating. If you follow the releases of the label It’s Eleven Records, you may not even be too surprised, ÿdeg publish their album there. ÿdeg find the golden ratio between Hardcore and Post Hardcore, between (Dark) Punk Rock and Post Punk. Melancholia and rage clash in a freezing thunderstorm of anger discharge and empowerment. ÿdeg have presented a true gem for lovers of sophisticated dark and heavy sounds. elme climaxes in the versatile track Középszerű szar, and makes you wish it contained more songs.
