Reinterpreting Luke 16:13 / Matthew 6:24

It is written that a carpenter from Israel once said that you cannot serve two masters. You do not have to look at American mega churches and their hypocrite leaders to realise that one can indeed pretend to be righteous in religion and a capitalist twat at the same time. In situations like this one can ask „What would Jesus do?“, and the choice of answer options in enormous. According to Reagan Youth, ‚Jesus was a Communist‘ and he would probably have dispossessed majority of contemporary Christians. In many other scenarios, Jesus would have done nothing, ridden away on a velociraptor, donated his last shekel to the church, or simply given up – the ways of the lord are inscrutable.

From Indie King to Business Man

‚Low Fat Jesus‘ by 9 o’clock nasty is not about the Jesus that Reagan Youth sang about – not at all. Instead, the three New Indie protagonists from Leicester present a Jesus that could be friends with Nick Clegg, Christian Lindner or David Nolan. Not only does this Jesus preach water ad pour you wine, he also charges you outrageous prices for that beverage. ‚Low Fat Jesus‘ will not stab you in the back, but only because he can still make profits from you believing in him. In the past, 9 o’clock nasty have undertaken some blows against patriarch and capitalist structures in their songs. In their latest single, they address the kingpins of oppression, gaslighting, intrigues and perversion. Noone is better in abuse of power and maintaining power structures than religious institutions.

Blessed be the Punk Rockers

They have done it before, and they will very likely do it again – 9 o’clock nasty plant intertextual references in their lyrics. Their previous single ‚Too Cool‚ began with the line

He’s the Low Fat Jesus, the Indie King

and four weeks later, ‚Low Fat Jesus‘ preaches frugality while he lives in luxury and splendor himself. Is there a deeper connection? Is ‚Low Fat Jesus‘ too cool for school? We may find out. The ways of the nasty are inscrutable.
What we do know is that ‚Low Fat Jesus‘ comes with a completely different sound than many of the previous singles by 9 o’clock nasty. Post Punk or Nasty Wave can hardly be found in this track. Instead, Ted, Sydd and Pete provide us with a two-and-a-half minute 1980s Punk Rock anthem.
Now, ‚Low Fat Jesus‘ might not be the genre-bending banger like the Dub Punk song ‚Sleepy Policeman‚ or the the Protest Folk hymn ‚Rise Up‚, but it is a refreshing and activating party tune that contains a catchy chorus and skillfully used melodic leads.
8/10 Mangoes
