Crossing Borders
Originally formed in Australia, The Dharma Chain have relocated to the vibrant capital of Germany. It is here, at Funkhaus Berlin to be more precise, where the quartet and their guest musicians recorded the band’s second longplayer. And you might be able to imagine that a band which has crossed time zones, meridians, and cultural spheres does not set harsh boundaries when it comes to musical styles and genres. Some Kind Of Pure State is a nightmare for supporters of pigeonholing, genre hardliners, or fans of musical stereotypes. Here are forty minutes of noises that reflect on the status quo on planet Earth, eight tracks full of emotions, thoughts, dreams, and deep reflections.
Growing and Pupating
The Dharma Chain have been and still are in a massive process of development. Their music, their message, and their mission are defined by progress. And five years after the release of their self-titled debut EP, the second album Some Kind Of Pure State is the documented reference to where, how far, and who they are in the year 2026. While the sound is coined by global turmoil on the one hand, it also reflects on the musicians’ ways of coping and growing. And it feels like, The Dharma Chain are on their way to break out of their cocoon, and to finally spread their magnificient wings very soon. Some Kind Of Pure State depicts a state of liminality.
Heavy Reveries
The forty minutes of music on Some Kind Of Pure State feel like an intense dream sequence. The Dharma Chain float from chilly heights and hazy atmospheric noises to gloomy breakdowns and catchy riffs. You will find traces of post punk, garage rock, shoegaze, dream pop, psychedelic rock, grungegaze, and many more related genres. But what you hear is the sound of The Dharma Chain. This coherent album with its beautiful arc of suspence and its open ending captivate the audience from beginning to end. After the final fading noises of the album’s last track, you will want to flip the record back to the A-Side and wait for its sequel.
