Public service announcement: “2022” by Franki doesn’t sound like you expect. In fact, it probably sounds the absolute opposite of our last turbulent planetary rotation.
Franki is a well-known figure in the world of chilled bedroom hip-hop, the new school digital swamp of modern artists and poets revamping the idea of melodramatic and ironical content. You might have heard first it under the banners of Tyler the Creator’s Wolfpack (Franki names Frank Ocean as one of his heroes), and later developed a strong fan following.
And Franki has a considerable reputation among those fans, quickly rising in ranks with his earlier experiments in bubbling slow flow. Showing his ambition and impressive swag he quickly developed his production skills and established quite a style.
„2022“ is the latest single of his, showcasing that ripe flavor. ‚A Train‘ is a classic example of Funky Pop that is borderline Hip (chill) Hop with sweet guitar licks and vocals on the front, also some g-thang keyboards. It sounds more like an appetizer for ‚Invisible‘, a longer, dreamier ballad that would make Joji jealous (with all due respect). This one is more electroacoustic laden, which goes nice with a falsetto chorus that is heavily dipped in reverb.
Not the 2022 we knew, but the one we needed.
